How my background brought me into operational management
When I worked for the local authority in learning and organisational development, supporting training programmes and projects to develop employees CPD, I had no idea where this would lead. With a placement in the strategy and policy team, then on to managing leadership and development programmes, I was soon then responsible for the development of the CPD provision for employees working across the Adult Care Sector in Hertfordshire.
This then led to working as an independent consultant, developing programmes of work, analysing projects and recommending how to improve service delivery. Alongside work, I have always volunteered for charities where I could support using my skills. I took the opportunity to start volunteering with a local Deaf charity which then led to working with them, advising how to implement effective HRM practices, which saw them transform from a small voluntary group to an established charity. All my working background experience to date, supported the development of their infrastructure and 15 years later – they are still running their services supporting the local deaf community, now as a CIO.
I’ve worked with other deaf and disability charities, alongside Trustee Boards, and Senior management developing offerings to their communities, and in a lesser capacity the local food bank and night shelter. In everything I do with them all, I know that it makes a difference to those that need them.
I’m currently a Trustee for the same reason, that I can offer my skills and experience to support the operational management of the charity. This charity also links with perinatal mental health and education so I’m particularly passionate about the support I can give.
One of my main current clients in a paid capacity, is a small but growing charity providing social and emotional wellbeing for primary school children. Again, they are investing in the infrastructure of the organisation, to get this right so they can continue to develop their offering nationally to more school children, teachers and parents. It’s exciting to be involved in their growth!
With all of these charities, the key is to establish a solid infrastructure, and operations which can help grow the organisation. Together with the right people to manage and lead the charity, they will all see huge impact and positive change for their beneficiaries, and I get the privilege of being a part of that journey too.
